Aspatria Angling Club Members News and Views

Our club does not charge the earth for access to its water, and we do not have page after page of rules and regulations. Most local and visiting anglers are happy to pay the few pounds we ask for a day, season or other permit, and to abide by their conditions. However, the club is aware that some individuals persist in fishing its water without a permit, and in ignoring rules such as no spinning prior to 1 June. This constitutes poaching, and is both illegal and unfair. We urge all genuine anglers not to hesitate in reporting anything suspicious to a committee member, Environment Agency official or police officer.

Aspatria Angling Club is considering making applications to renew its former lease of some water on the Ellen around Baggrow and Blennerhasset. Much of this stretch is narrow, tree-lined and fast flowing 'pocket water,' ideally suited to the roving angler employing short-line fly-fishing and spinning tactics. It is certainly capable of producing quality fish; exploring the area on 26 May, Dr Clark Colman used light spinning gear to take twelve good wild brownies, including a personal best for the Ellen of fourteen inches and 1lb 1oz in weight.

New Water For The Club?
Clark's successful lure was a size 1 gold Mepps presented on 5lb line, which also accounted for a very acrobatic escapee rainbow trout of around 2lbs, and a small hooked-and-lost herling sea trout. It is hoped that Aspatria A. C. will be able to offer its members and permit holders fishing in this area in the near future. Watch this space for details!
